On June speaker is Kim White who will be updating our group on the DuPage Monarch and Pollinator Project, and Waystations. Kim spent 19 years associated with Brookfield Zoo’s Education Department as both a volunteer and an employee, teaching school groups. She is a naturalist, a former co-steward for the DuPage County Forest Preserve, education coordinator for the DuPage Monarch Project and avid gardener for both food production and habitat creation. Our July speaker, Jim Rowan, will be presenting “Don’t Squash That Bug!”. We will learn all about the insects and spiders, how to distinguish them and separate some of the “good guys” from the “bad guys.” Jim has a degree in natural science from Northeastern Illinois University and has been associated with North Park Village Nature Center in Chicago and the Ft. Dearborn Audubon Society. He has lectured to many organizations and schools over the past 25 years.

Join us in August as we have fun with Veronica Porter (known as Aunt V). She will be speaking about Indoor Gardening to Extend the Season, from Houseplants to Succulents. Veronica is a third-generation organic farmer, chef, culinary instructor, and food educator for homes and gardens. Veronica is a Licensed Chef and holds a Master’s of Organic Urban Farming and Gardening.

Indoor Potluck Social Event

The term potluck was used in the Middle Ages to describe an impromptu meal served to unexpected guests or travelers. A person that may drop-in at dinner hour would get “the luck of the pot:” whatever food was left over or kept on the simmer. Join us for a casual indoor potluck gathering where each person contributes by bringing a dish to share. We will blend camaraderie, creativity and delicious food. Our event will include social time and fun games.

Winter Seed Sowing

Learn how to start seeds easily by growing them in the house without special lighting or equipment. Winter sowing works with nature to propagate your favorite vegetables, herbs and native plants for the spring planting season. Jan is a seasoned Master Gardener, who has been winter sowing since 2008.

Elections and West Suburban Nursing Christmas Centerpiece Craft

We will hold our club’s annual election of officers. Following elections, our members will create a unique Christmas centerpiece for the West Suburban Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Each club member will add their own personal touches to the centerpieces. The residents love our annual Christmas projects and look forward to receiving them every year.
